A Brief Overview of Turks and Caicos Islands
The Turks and Caicos Islands have an interesting motto to the effect that they are “Beautiful by Nature, Clean by Choice”. As a British Colonial outpost, they do sing “God Save the Queen” as their national anthem. It remains to be seen whether the younger generations will continue to display this loyalty to the monarchy. The capital city is Cockburn Turn and the larges city within the location is Providenciales. English is the official language. The ethnicity of the local population is 90% black. There are some mix races as well as Northern American people who constitute the rest of the population.
1. Administration: This is one of the British Overseas territories. They had self government which was suspended due to financial impropriety. The titular head of state is Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. There is a governor post which is currently occupied by Gordon Wetherell. The office of a premier was suspended due to problems with the government at the time. In fact self rule was put on hold as a consequence of these developments.
2. Geography: The total land mass is 430 km2 or one hundred and ninety three square miles. The total population that is occupying this land is over thirty six thousand people. Therefore the population density has been estimated at 88km/km2. The Turks and Caicos Islands have chosen to use the dollar as their official currency. They drive on the left as a consequence of their association with the United Kingdom.
3. Constituency: In fact this region is made of two groups of tropical islands within the West Indies area. It has grown as one of the most discreet financial centers in the world. These islands lie south east of the Mayaguana and Bahamas. Although they are very near the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands have established a separate political entity. Providenciales has the largest population which is about a third of the entire settlement.
4. Political turmoil: In 2009 there was a serious political crisis when the UK government suspended self rule on account of ministerial corruption. The governor is given prerogative powers for a period of two years. This is one of those colonial outposts that might be of importance in the history of Britain. It remains to be seen whether the island residents will clamor for final political independence.
5. A tourist destination: Apart from their popularity as a financial hub, the Turks and Caicos Islands are well known for tourism. They are blessed with great geography and a sunny climate. The fact that they are made up of different islands makes it easy to construct tourism centers using certain independent providers.
There is plenty to admire about the way that this establishment has been organized. The Turks and Caicos Islands offer great entertainment and an opportunity to relax in the sun. The tourism industry has been significantly developed in order to provide the islands with a sustainable income. From that perspective there is much to admire about the organization of these islands.
